The Abundance of Awards

Birštonas has received a number of nominations too many to count. Therefore, we will mention just a few more significant ones, received during the past few years. In 2013, Birštonas Municipality received the “Golden Elder’s Staff” (“Auksinė Krivūlė”) award of the Ministry of Energy for tourism projects; same year, Mayor Nijolė Dirginčienė received the “Culture Politician of the Year” award for her extra attention to culture, the adequate funding of cultural projects, and the development of the cultural infrastructure of the town. The latter award was present by the Association of Lithuanian Culture Centers. In April 2014, the International Committee for the Banner of Peace under the UN announced Birštonas the City of Peace. In 2014, the project of the Birštonas Municipality Administration on the reconstruction of the Birštonas Central Park and its accommodation for  active recreation and tourism worth of 1.632 million euros, was recognized by the Ministry of Economy as the best EU project in the tourism category in Kaunas region. Same year, the project of the reconstruction of the Kurhaus, worth of 1.5 million euros, was recognized as one of the three best projects in Lithuania, implemented with the help of EU funds. On June 22, 2015, Birštonas was honoured with a prestigious diploma of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the promotion of European ideas, their proliferation, and the active contribution to the development of international relations. On December 17, 2015, the State Tourism Department under the Ministry of Economy recognized Birštonas as the most attractive tourist location of 2015.
